Without the Postcard

Acapulco is strange at night.

Too many palms. Too much concrete. Too much humidity sticking to your shirt like bad decisions and airport whiskey. The kind of place where light never really rests. It just mutates.

I was there for an editorial assignment. Two days moving through air conditioning, elevators, schedules, expensive lobbies, dead-eyed coffee, people speaking in the calm corporate tone that usually means everybody is exhausted.

And then this photograph happened.

Not because I was searching for it. That’s the important part. Good photographs rarely arrive like obedient dogs. They appear sideways. Drunk. Uninvited.

I looked down from above and suddenly Acapulco stopped being Acapulco. No ocean. No sunsets. No cinematic romance. Just black palm trees stabbed into white sand under violent artificial light. It looked less like Mexico and more like the stage design for some tropical noir hallucination.

That interested me immediately.

Photography is full of tourists pretending to be poets. Everybody hunting “moments.” Everybody desperate to explain the world through their lens like prophets with overpriced straps and perfect presets.

But sometimes the best thing a photograph can do is refuse explanation entirely.

This frame tells you almost nothing. Good.
Nothing is underrated.

The shadows are doing all the heavy lifting here anyway. Long dark lines cutting across the sand like edits made by a nervous god at three in the morning.

I like photographs that feel slightly wrong. Slightly detached from reality. Images that don’t scream for attention but quietly poison your brain for a few seconds.

This was outside the assignment. Which means, naturally, it was probably the real work.

That’s the joke of editorial photography. You fly somewhere to photograph one thing and end up emotionally remembering another completely useless image you made alone for yourself in ten seconds between exhaustion and room service.

The older I get, the less interested I am in photography as information.

Information expires.

Mood survives.
